What’s on Chacha’s Playlist for November: Bon Iver, Silversun Pickups, Ten Second Epic, and The New Cities

Band Montage copy

I have a confession to make: I get bored of my music very very quickly. Then again, part of it may be due to the fact that I’m listening to it constantly no matter where I go. As a result, every month or so, I try to find new music (which I define as music I haven’t heard before) and luckily this month, I got some great recommendations. Oddly enough, I seemed to be in an indie rock mood (and by indie I mean “indie”, not indie/independent…and yes there’s a huge difference). So once again, here’s what’s on my playlist for the month of November:

Bon Iver: For Emma, Forever Ago (song: Skinny Love)

Kimberly (a fellow blogger on the3st) actually recommended Bon Iver to me a few weeks ago and I have been hooked ever since. According to his biography on wikipedia, “after the breakup of a band, relationship, and bout with mono, Vernon (the main artist of Bon Iver) stayed for three months at his father’s cabin in the northwoods of Wisconsin…he did not intend to write or record any music during the time but rather to recuperate from the events of the previous year. [Nevertheless], eventually a record began to evolve during this cathartic time of isolation.” Even though I’m not usually a big fan of folk/indie music, the album has to be one of my favorite albums in a long time. If you ever just need something to chillax to, this album is the one. For Emma, Forever ago was released in 2007 and recieved spots on several critics’ best album-of-the-year lists!

Silversun Pickups: Swoon (song: Substitution)

I haven’t listened fo the Silversun Pickups for a long time now, and when I saw that they had recently released a new album, I decided to check it out. If you haven’t heard them before, I would say that their sound is something of a cross between Modest Mouse and The Smashing Pumpkins (I would place them under the shoegaze genre). Their first single off the album, Substitution, is incredibly addicting (the music video is too, that drum set is plain awesome!). Make sure to check out Panic Switch (which has a awesome guitar solo towards the end) and The Royal We too.

Ten Second Epic: Hometown (song: Every Day)

My friends and I like to joke that Canada is the indie America and these next two bands certainly fit into that category (although in this case, I mean indie to be relatively unknown in the US, they’re kinda big in Canada). In my last post, I highlighted Lights as one of my favorite new artists. Well it turns out, she’s done a few collaborations with other bands in Canada, and this one has to be my favorite. Ten Second Epic is a five-piece rock band based out of Canada and their newest album Hometown, reached number 16 on the Canadian charts. They remind me a lot like Simple Plan, so maybe it’s my adolescent self coming to the surface, but this song is just too damn catchy! The album as a whole isn’t too bad, but definitely not as catchy as the singles.

The New Cities: Lost in City Lights (song: Dead End Countdown)

The New Cities is the second Canadian band that I was talking about and what do ya know, they’re touring with Ten Second Epic this year too (although in Canada). Their debut album, Lost in City Lights, was released in Canada on April, 2009 and will be released in the US on October 13th! For some reason, dance-rock has gotten a huge resurgence recently (notable popular bands including Cobra Starship and 3Oh3) and The New Cities might be the next big thing. If you feel as though you’ve heard a few of their songs already, odds are you really have! They’ve been featured extensively throughout Gossip Girl (although I don’t really know which songs since I don’t watch the show). Nevertheless, here’s my favorite song off of the album (I just love a band that features a lot of synth piano hah)

Lastly, for this past week, I’ve been in a Vanessa Carlton mood (most of that thanks to Alyssa’s post linking the song White Castles, which was my first time ever hearing it). Why isn’t she as big as I think she should be (asides from A Thousand Miles)? Then again, I’m a sucker for piano-songwriters…but still. Thoughts anyone?
