Humor me for a second, and place reality at the back of your mind. Imagine that you’re at the beach. What’s going on? The waves roar as they break upon the shore, overpowering the sounds of seagulls calling out to one another. You feel the grains of sand give way to your feet with every step you take. If you’re not careful, you might even feel the grit of a few grains between your teeth and taste the extreme saltiness on your tongue.
Experiencing any of these sensations away from the shore can very easily transport your mind to the exact place and time at which you created those memories. Of all your senses, your sense of smell can be the most powerful, strong enough to recreate visual images in a completely different environment. “None of the other senses can touch us so profoundly as scent,” acknowledges perfume designer Christopher Brosius on his website. “Scent,” he futher explains, “is the record of your own special life – it’s your experience. My mission is to capture that experience.”
With unique scents such as Russian Caravan Tea and In the Library, Brosius has certainly achieved his goal through his perfume line, I Hate Perfume (so named after experiencing one too many awful scents on his female passengers during his time as a New York City cab driver). I recently had the pleasure of sampling some of the other scents in his CB Experience and CB Secret History collections, and I was truly blown away. At the Beach 1966 was a light scent with a slight hint of sun tan lotion. I was especially surprised by Burning Leaves. In the bottle, it smells literally like a bonfire (or what your clothes smell like after you attend one), and I wasn’t really sure if that would be pleasant to actually wear. However, I was surprised to find that once on the skin, its fragrance had changed. Now, Burning Leaves had a dark, musky aroma (definitely suitable for both men and women) that reminded me somewhat of burning Nag Champa incense. I’m also dying to get a whiff of Walking in the Air, which was inspired by the scent of snow!
